Train From Barcelona to Valencia: Five Routes
The Barcelona Valencia train is easy to book, because Renfe runs Euromed trains from Barcelona Sants to València Joaquín Sorolla, and the first one leaves at 07:15. Seville, San Sebastián and Málaga have trains from Sants too. Lisbon has none that we could confirm, and the entry on it says what to do instead.
The best train trip is the one you can book without guessing, so read the operator's own timetable before you pay.
1. Barcelona train to Valencia: the Euromed
The train from Barcelona to Valencia is the Euromed, and it connects the two city centres. Renfe says the trains run from Barcelona Sants to València Joaquín Sorolla, with the first departure from Sants at 07:15. The Valencia station is open from 05:45 to midnight, and it has a metro and bus link and a taxi rank.
Renfe's press office says Euromed went from five to six trains a day in each direction in May 2026. That is one of eight long-distance trains a day in each direction between València, Castelló and Barcelona. Renfe's route page and its press release give no journey time, so open the timetable search for your date to see how long your train takes. Buy early, because Renfe says advance tickets get the lowest prices.
Trains leave from Sants, so the Barcelona Sants guide helps if you want to know the station before an early start.
2. Seville from Barcelona: AVE, Avlo or long distance
Seville has a train from Barcelona with no change, and Renfe sells it as AVE, Avlo or long distance. The first train leaves Barcelona Sants at 05:50 and arrives at Sevilla Santa Justa, which Renfe calls a central station. In the other direction, the first train from Santa Justa to Sants leaves at 08:00.
Santa Justa is open from 04:30 and has a taxi rank and a bus link. A ticket on an AVE or long-distance train also includes a free Cercanías ride, which is Renfe's commuter train. Renfe's route pages give no journey time, so check the exact time for your date before you plan a connection.
Seville is a long trip, so treat it as a day of travel and not an outing. Book a hotel near the station if you arrive late.
3. Lisbon from Barcelona: no through train we could confirm
Lisbon has no train from Barcelona that we could confirm, and this is the honest answer. Renfe lists route pages for Valencia, Seville, San Sebastián, Málaga and other Spanish cities, but none for Lisbon. We did not find an official page that sells one ticket for the whole trip.
To go by land, plan two trips and check the timetable of Portugal's operator for the second part. Book each part on its own and leave a gap between them. Look at flights instead when time matters more than the view.
Pro Tip For a trip with a change, book the first train so that you arrive at least a few hours before the second leaves, because two tickets bought separately do not protect each other if a train runs late.
4. San Sebastián from Barcelona: one long-distance line
San Sebastián has a long-distance train from Barcelona Sants, and the first one leaves at 07:28. Renfe sells it as a long-distance train and not as an AVE, and its page gives no journey time. San Sebastián station is open from 05:00 to 23:30 and has a taxi rank and a bus link.
A ticket includes the free Cercanías ride, as on the Seville line. Pick a departure that gets you in before the evening, since the station closes at 23:30. Coming from France instead? The guide to the Paris to Barcelona train covers that side.
5. Málaga from Barcelona: AVE from early morning
Málaga has an AVE from Barcelona, and Renfe says trains leave Barcelona for Málaga María Zambrano from 05:50. Renfe's page names AVE and does not give a journey time. Like the Seville line, it is a full day of travel.
Málaga is far enough that a night in between can be worth the cost. Look at the timetable for your date, then choose a ticket that lets you change the time if you may need to.
How to choose your train from Barcelona
Choose by distance and by what you do next. Valencia is the easiest, Seville and Málaga need a full day, San Sebastián needs a long-distance ticket, and Lisbon needs a plan with two parts. The picture below shows the first train from Sants for each route.
| Route | Train type on Renfe's page | First train from Sants | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valencia | Euromed | 07:15 | Six Euromed a day in each direction since May 2026 |
| Seville | AVE, Avlo or long distance | 05:50 | Free Cercanías ride in the ticket |
| San Sebastián | Long distance | 07:28 | Station closes at 23:30 |
| Málaga | AVE | 05:50 | Full day of travel |
| Lisbon | None confirmed | Not applicable | Two separate trips |
A Barcelona rental car is the other way to cover these distances, and it only makes sense when you need a car for the days after. The getting-around guide covers the choices in the city.
