What is Montjuïc, and is it worth it?

Yes: Montjuïc packs a castle, views, museums, Poble Espanyol and the Magic Fountain onto one hill. You can do it all on your own with tickets.

Montjuïc is one of the easier things to do in Barcelona solo: tickets, a cable car and no guide needed.

End the day lower down, at a Barceloneta beach bar by the sea.

Getting up the hill: cable car and funicular

The cable car is the easiest way up to the castle. It runs from Montjuïc Park to the castle with no stops on the way up.

Book the timed ticket to cut the wait. If you book for more than one person, you must arrive together and ride at the same time.

The cable car was reported closed for works from October 2025 and back in service since April 13, 2026. The coach tour's listing says it is under maintenance from late January to early March, so check before you go.

Cable car hours, from the official listing
MonthsHours
January and February10 am to 6 pm
March to May10 am to 7 pm
June to September10 am to 9 pm

Funicular to Montjuïc or the cable car

The Montjuïc funicular is covered by the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, but the cable car is not. See getting around Barcelona for the card and the metro.

You don't need to compare car hire Barcelona Airport cheap deals for this hill: public transport gets you to its foot.

Coming from the old town (the Las Ramblas Santa Ana end or the port), allow time to cross to the hill.

Montjuïc Castle: admission and opening hours

Castle entry is not included in the cable car ticket. Adult entry is reported at about €12, and under-16s are reported free.

Entry is reported free on Sundays from 3 pm and all day on the first Sunday of the month. Hours are reported as 10 am to 8 pm from March to October and 10 am to 6 pm from November to February. Sources differ, so check before you go.

Montjuïc castle tickets and the cable car

The cable car drops you at the castle, but you pay for the castle separately. The coach tour with the cable car does not include castle entry either.

The Montjuïc Magic Fountain show: days and times

In October 2026, the Magic Fountain was reported to run Thursday to Saturday from 9 to 10 pm, with two half-hour shows a night. No November dates were published when we checked.

The summer season was reported as June 3 to September 27, Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 10:30 pm. The fountain is reported to often pause for a few weeks of upkeep in late autumn or winter, so check the city's calendar before you go.

The evening fountain show is an easy plan among things to do in Barcelona as a couple.

The fountain does not run every night. Check the city's calendar for the day you go.

Where the Montjuïc fountain is

It sits at the foot of Montjuïc, by Plaça d'Espanya. The Segway tour stops at both.

Museums: MNAC, Miró and the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion

Pick MNAC for a big art museum, the Miró museum for one artist, or the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion for a short stop. Tickets cost from €9 to €18.

  • MNAC: from €12, with an audio guide app. Free on Saturdays from 3 pm and on the first Sunday of the month, the listing says.
  • Fundació Joan Miró: from €18, skip-the-line. Last entry 1 hour before closing. Closed January 1 and December 25 and 26.
  • Mies van der Rohe Pavilion: from €9, with an audio guide in 5 languages.

Beyond the museums

For local things to do in Barcelona away from the museums, the city has quieter corners.

Poble Espanyol

Poble Espanyol is a village of buildings from all over Spain, on Montjuïc. It is good for families: there are crafts workshops and a children's area with giant slides.

It is open Monday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to midnight. Shops and workshops close earlier.

Tours of the hill: walking, cable car and Segway

Most people need no tour here. If you want one, the Segway tour suits active visitors, and the coach tour adds the old town.

The coach tour covers the old town; for things to do in Barri Gotic Barcelona on your own, start in its squares.

On the Segway tour, riders must be 14 or older, which makes it one of the active things to do in Barcelona with teenager-age kids. Riders must weigh 99 to 286 lb (45 to 130 kg) and be at least 4 ft 11 in (150 cm) tall.

Tips for visiting Montjuïc

  1. Ride the cable car together

If you book for a group, everyone must arrive and ride at the same time.

  2. Castle entry is extra

The cable car ticket stops at the castle gate. Pay for the castle separately.

  3. Check the fountain dates

The Magic Fountain runs only on some nights. Check the city's calendar first.

  4. Use your travel card

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card covers the funicular, not the cable car.

  5. Watch your bag

The city says pickpockets work most at metro stations and monuments. Keep your bag in front of you.
