Short answer
Not by Spain's national figures, but in our sample May to September cost far more than winter. Eurostat puts restaurant and hotel prices across Spain below Italy and France (a national figure for 2024). We have no figure for Barcelona alone. In our study a 4-star room cost a median €97 a night in January. In May and June it cost €209 and €218. We read all these prices on one day, 25 October 2026, so later months were read further ahead. For 4 nights, two people pay about €1,089 on a budget, €1,413 at mid-range and €2,529 in comfort. Flights are extra.
How to spend less in Barcelona
- Go in January. Our 4-star median was €97 a night then. In June it was €218. We read both on 25 October 2026, so June was read further ahead.
- Sleep at 3-star. Our 3-star median was €138 a night for two. The 4-star median was €163. The tourist tax is lower too: €7 instead of €8.40 per person per night.
- Check in on a weekday. In our sample, 3-star Saturdays cost a median 19 % more than the Tuesday of the same week. 83 % of 96 hotel-night pairs were dearer on the Saturday.
- Buy the T-dia only for busy days. The 24-hour pass costs €12 and one ride costs €2.90. So the pass only wins from your fifth ride of the day.
- Have the menú del día at lunch. Guides put this set lunch at €10 to €18. A meal at a mid-range place is closer to €28.
- Check the Barcelona Card sums first. The 72-hour card costs €55. If you would buy a day pass each day, its transport is worth €36. Then your paid entries must top €19 at full price. We did not count discounts.
We leave out flights: what you pay depends on your home airport and your dates.
What a Barcelona trip costs for two
At mid-range, two people pay about €1,097 for 3 nights, €1,413 for 4 nights and €1,729 for 5 nights. A week of 7 nights comes to about €2,361. For a 5-night trip, plan on €865 each. Flights are not in these sums.
Each style uses the same 4-night plan in any month. It counts the hotel, 2 meals out per person a day and 2 sights. On top come a T-dia for each person each day, two airport metro rides each and the tourist tax.
| Style | Hotel | Eating out | Activities | Transport, airport, tax | Total | Per person per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star hotel, cheap meals | €552 | €224 | €126 | €187 | €1,089 | €136 |
| Mid-range Our default 4-star hotel, mid-range meals | €652 | €448 | €126 | €187 | €1,413 | €177 |
| Comfort 5-star hotel, one fine dinner a day | €1,192 | €1,024 | €126 | €187 | €2,529 | €316 |

Hotel prices in Barcelona by month
A hotel room for two in Barcelona cost a median €138 a night at 3-star, €163 at 4-star and €298 at 5-star. For 4-star, January was the cheapest month at €97. In May and June the same class cost €209 and €218.
We read 2,043 prices from 381 hotels on Google Hotels on 25 October 2026. Each month has one Tuesday and one Saturday night, from November 2026 to September 2027. Every price is for 2 adults sharing one room. The hotels split into 73 at 3-star, 148 at 4-star and 20 at 5-star. Another 140 had no star rating on Google or were below 3-star. We could not check if a price includes taxes and fees, so the calculator adds the tourist tax on top. Half of all 4-star nights fell between €124 and €205.
Month by month, by star class
Google shows different hotels on different dates. So compare a month only within one star class. Of the 11 months, January was the cheapest for a 4-star room. We do not name one dearest month for 4-star. May and June sit close together, and their order changed when we read more prices.
| Month | 3-star | 4-star | 5-star |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | €131 | €156 | €222 |
| December 2026 | €93 | €116 | €183 |
| January 2027 | €78 | €97 | €238 |
| February 2027 | €94 | €116 | €223 |

| June 2027 | €168 | €218 | €346 |
| July 2027 | €149 | €187 | €315 |
| August 2027 | €145 | €174 | €296 |
| September 2027 | €186 | €215 | €414 |
About these numbers
Medians per room per night for 2 adults, as Google Hotels showed them. We read every month on one day, 25 October 2026. So later months were read further ahead: 23 to 324 days. Both the season and the time before your stay shape a month's price. Some nights were read again at a deeper search depth. For 10 of the 22 nights we kept the first 100 results, not 60, because those months had too few 5-star prices. Those months hold more prices, and their 4-star medians came out a little higher. 5-star months rest on 10 to 22 prices from 20 hotels, so treat them as a rough guide.
Saturday against Tuesday
How we compared weekends
For each pair, we took one hotel's Saturday price and its price on the Tuesday of that week (521 pairs). At 4-star, the Saturday cost a median 4.7 % more. 59 % of 4-star pairs were dearer on the Saturday. At 3-star the gap was bigger: 19 % more, with 83 % of pairs dearer. In July and August, 60 % of all pairs were dearer on the Saturday. Each month is just one weekend, so single months are rough. Their median gap ran from -4.8 % in May to 38.5 % in September.

To eat well for less, have your main meal at lunch. That is when most places serve the menú del día. A few small extras can surprise you. Tipping is optional in Spain: people often round up or leave small change for good service, and no service charge is expected. Some places add a charge for bread or a terrace table, so check the menu. Tap water in Barcelona is safe to drink, though many people still buy bottled water. To taste the city with a guide, see our food and tapas tours.

What a rental car costs in Barcelona
A rental car in Barcelona costs anywhere from €22 a day for a small car to €65 at the top of one site's range, going by published prices. €45 sits in the middle.
These are published prices, not our own. Rates swing with the dates, the car, the insurance and fuel. The calculator uses the lowest, middle and highest of 3 published figures: €22, €45 and €52 a day. They are not car classes. They leave out insurance, deposit, fuel and young-driver fees.
- €22 a day:
Small car hire in Barcelona typically costs around €22 per day
kayak.ie - €25–€65 a day: middle
Typically €25–€65 per day
malcorentacar.com - €52 a day:
On average, car rentals in Barcelona cost around €52 per day
roadgenius.com.au
Advertised minimums, not typical prices: from €9 a day (easyterra.com) · from €13 a day (roadgenius.com.au).
Inside Barcelona you will not need a car. The metro and buses reach the main sights, and trains run to Montserrat and Girona. From the airport, we priced only the metro ticket: €5.90 per person, one way. The Aerobús airport bus and taxis cost more.
Tourist tax, metro fares and the Barcelona Card
How we apply the tax
Catalan News, read 25 October 2026: "In four-star hotels, the rate increases from €5.70 to €8.40 in the city". The calculator uses this 4-star rate for every style. So budget trips pay a little less tax than shown, and comfort trips more. The city's part of the tax is due to rise. Catalan News, read 25 October 2026: "the surcharge rise to €5 in 2026, €6 in 2027". So stays next year pay more per person per night than the calculator shows. The calculator uses one flat rate, with no exemptions or caps. Check the current rules before you go.
Is the Barcelona Card worth it?
The 72-hour Barcelona Card (€55) pays off if your paid entries are worth at least €19 at full price. That sum is in euros, not a count of entries. It assumes you would buy a T-dia every day, so the card's transport is worth €36. We did not count discounts the card may give.
| Card | Price | Transport worth | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 hours | €27 | €24 2 × €12 day pass | €3 |
| 72 hours | €55 | €36 3 × €12 day pass | €19 |
Card prices from the official seller, bcn.travel, read 25 October 2026. The table counts transport at the T-dia price. If you ride fewer than 5 times a day, single tickets cost less, so the card is worth less to you.
Key findings of the 2026 Barcelona Travel Cost Study
- Restaurant and hotel prices across Spain were 83.9 % of the EU average in 2024, according to Eurostat's price level index (EU = 100). This is a national figure, not Barcelona alone.
-
In our sample of 2,043 Google Hotels prices (381 hotels, stays from November 2026 to September 2027), a 4-star night in Barcelona cost a median €163 per room for two adults, with the middle half between €124 and €205. A 3-star night cost a median €138, a 5-star night €298
(a smaller sample: 20 five-star hotels). - Of the 11 months we could compare, January 2027 was the cheapest for a 4-star hotel (a median €97 a night). In May and June 2027 the same class cost a median €209 and €218, so a late-spring night cost about 115% more than a January one. Each month rests on one Tuesday and one Saturday night, read between three weeks and eleven months ahead, so the season and the booking lead time both play a part.
- For the same 4-star hotel, a Saturday night cost a median 4.7 % more than the Tuesday of the same week. Across all hotels in July and August, 60 % charged more on the Saturday.
- Travel sites, guides and food-tour companies publish prices of €10 to €18 for a cheap meal, €20 to €35 per person for a meal at a mid-range restaurant, and €50 to €180 per person for fine dining.
- Published average prices for a rental car in Barcelona disagree widely: 3 car-rental and travel sites state between €22 and €52 a day. The real price depends on the dates, the car, insurance and fuel.
- Our calculator puts a mid-range trip of 4 nights for two at about €1,413: one shared 4-star room at the all-year median, two meals out a day each, two tours at their from-prices, a daily public-transport pass, the airport metro both ways and the tourist tax. Flights, breakfast and drinks are not included.

What we measured ourselves
- Hotels: 2,043 prices of 381 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 25 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, November 2026 to September 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date.
- Activities: the "from" prices of the 143 tours and tickets on our 23 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 25 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page. A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.
What we cite
- Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found in Google search results and taken from the result text on 25 October 2026, and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. No figures from forums or social media. The mid-range meal and the wine figures rest on 2 sources each. Pages that show a date are from after 2022, except the set lunch (menú del día), beer and coffee figures, from 2020; many pages show no date at all.
- Tourist tax, fares and the Barcelona Card: the Catalan News, TMB and bcn.travel.
- Price level: Eurostat, price level index for restaurants and hotels (EU = 100), 2024.
How the calculator adds up
- Our default trip: 4 nights, two people sharing one room, mid-range, any month. The hotel is the median of all our 4-star prices from November 2026 to September 2027, so October is not in it. Each person sees two sights at their lowest listed prices: the Sagrada Familia (€34) and Casa Batlló (€29). There is no car. A person travelling alone pays for a full room. Each person buys a 24-hour pass for each night of the stay. That only pays if you ride 5 or more times a day; fewer rides cost less. On a budget, every meal out is priced as a set lunch. The all-year hotel median pools every Tuesday and Saturday we read, so busier months count more.
- Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
- Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
- Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
- Tourist tax: travellers × nights × €8.40, the 2026 rate for a 4-star hotel in the city. It is used for every style, and every traveller is counted.
- Transport: nights × travellers × the 24-hour pass; airport: two airport metro rides per traveller (€5.90 each, one there and one back), counted separately, so arrival and departure days may count a ride twice.
Each line is rounded to whole euros.

Barcelona travel costs: your questions
Is Barcelona expensive to visit?
Spain as a whole is cheaper than Italy or France on Eurostat's index, but the month matters a lot. Eurostat puts restaurant and hotel prices across Spain at 83.9 % of the EU average (2024). That is a national figure, not one for Barcelona alone. In our study a 4-star room was advertised at a median €97 a night in January and €218 in June.
How much does a trip to Barcelona cost?
For two people at mid-range, plan on about €1,097 for 3 nights, €1,413 for 4 nights and €2,361 for 7 nights. A 4-night trip costs about €1,089 on a budget and €2,529 in comfort. Flights are extra. Work out your own trip.
How much money do I need per day in Barcelona?
Is a hundred euros a day enough? With a hotel, not for a mid-range trip. That costs about €177 per person per night, if two of you share a room on a 4-night trip. On a budget it is about €136, and in comfort about €316. Without the hotel, yes. Meals, transport, sights and tax come to about €67 on a budget and €95 at mid-range per person per night. That spreads the airport rides and two sights over the nights.
What is the cheapest month to visit Barcelona?
Our cheapest month was January. A 4-star room was advertised at a median €97 a night then, and a 3-star room at €78. In May and June a 4-star room was advertised at €209 and €218. We read all months on 25 October 2026, so later months were read further ahead. A 4-night mid-range trip for two comes to about €1,149 in January and €1,633 in June.
What drives the cost of a Barcelona trip?
The hotel is the biggest single cost. In our 4-night trip for two, the hotel is €652 of about €1,413. Eating out is next at €448. Room prices also climb from May to September in our sample, read on one day. The tourist tax adds up too: €8.40 per person per night at a 4-star hotel in the city.
How much is a beer in Barcelona?
Published prices put a beer at €2.40 to €4, about €2.75 in the middle. Time Out Barcelona wrote in Catalan in 2025: "costa 2,40 euros de mitjana" (read 25 October 2026). An espresso costs about €1.88. Sources.
How much does food cost in Barcelona?
Published prices put a set lunch at about €14 and a mid-range meal at about €28 per person. Appetece wrote: "The price of the menú del día in Barcelona ranges from €12 to €18" (read 25 October 2026). Published fine-dining prices run from €50 to over €180 per person.
Is the Barcelona Card worth it?
Only if you use a lot of it. The 72-hour card costs €55. If you would buy a day pass each day, its transport is worth €36. Then your paid entries must be worth at least €19 in total, in euros at full price. If you ride fewer than 5 times a day, the card is worth even less. We did not count discounts.
How much is the tourist tax in Barcelona?
At a 4-star hotel in the city, €8.40 per person per night in 2026. It is €7 at 3-star and below, and €12 at 5-star, according to Catalan News (read 25 October 2026). The city's part is due to rise next year: "the surcharge rise to €5 in 2026, €6 in 2027". You do not pay it in advance. Your hotel or apartment collects it when you check in or pay.
How much is a rental car in Barcelona per day?
There is no single price. Published daily prices run from €22 for a small car to €65, with €45 in the middle. The dates, the car, insurance and fuel all change it. Use the car button on this page to check prices for your dates at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
