La Boqueria market in Barcelona: what it is

La Boqueria is the big food market on La Rambla, full of stalls. People go to look, to snack and to buy fresh food.

Cooking classes buy their ingredients there, and most food walks pass through it.

Mercat or Mercado de la Boqueria: one market, two names

Mercat de la Boqueria is the Catalan name, and Mercado de la Boqueria is the Spanish one. Both mean the same market.

Where it is: La Boqueria, La Rambla, Barcelona, Spain

The market is on La Rambla, the long walking street in the old town. The food walks meet close by: at Liceu or at the Miró mosaic on La Rambla 71.

When is La Boqueria open?

La Boqueria is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Three cooking schools that visit the market say so on their listings.

The market is a daytime stop; your Barcelona best nightlife plans belong to a separate evening.

No market on Sundays or public holidays: plan your visit for Monday to Saturday.

What to eat at La Boqueria, Barcelona

Try jamón and other cured ham, patatas bravas and Catalan bites. Those are the foods the market tours list.

Beyond the stalls, the good food Barcelona bars serve is easy to find without a guide.

La Boqueria with a guide or on your own

On your own is fine if you just want to look and snack. A guide helps if you want to know what to try and why.

The guided walks cost from €43 to €45 for 2.5 hours, plus drinks. To cook what you buy, the paella classes start with a market visit.

Which La Boqueria market tour goes inside

Five of our six picks go inside the market. The 90-minute La Rambla walk is the one that does not: its listing says it visits "the outside of La Boqueria Market".
